Southwest Iowa offers hundreds of things to do and see and enjoy. No matter when you visit, the area offers something for everyone. Fish the lakes that are crowded with numerous species, bag your limit of pheasants, hike the Loess Hills, catch a rodeo at Sidney's Championship Rodeo, drive Western Skies Scenic Byways, watch millions of waterfowl at DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, or find luck at Council Bluffs' casinos.
Recent economic growth in the region has been highlighted by new business investment, as well as the expansion of several existing employers. Recent examples of new business investment include Mastercraft Furniture and D'Kei Incorporated in Council Bluffs, and Americana Companies in Shenandoah. Employers in the region who have recently expanded include CI Direct and their new facility in Avoca, Oakland Foods in Oakland, and Plumrose USA in Council Bluffs. Phase one of the Manawa Commerce Center in Council Bluffs has been completed and will provide 175,000 square feet of warehouse/distribution space to the area. Commercial and residential construction have been strong in the area as well.
The area is served by a regional commercial airport, several smaller municipal airports, a multi-county regional transit system, state-of-the-art medical care, excellent schools, and the educational opportunities provided by Iowa Western Community College and other institutes of higher learning. |
