License Title: Professional Landscape Architect

License Description: Professional landscape architects plan the best use of land areas for parks and other recreational facilities, airports, golf courses, highways, factories, shopping malls, housing developments, and other projects. They use trees and shrubs and design walkways and lighting to create a pleasant environment; confer with clients, engineers and architects to achieve overall project; prepare site plans, working drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for land development; supervise all aspects of the project--including the grading of the land, surface and subsoil damage, erosion control, planting, and reforestation; and, inspect construction work in progress to ensure compliance with landscape specifications.

Authorizing Statute: Code of Iowa, Chapter 554B

Requirements for License:To become licensed (required by the legislature as of July 1, 2003), an applicant must pass all five parts of a uniform national examination and have his or her credentials evaluated and approved. Applicants registered prior to the July 1, 2003 date shall be issued a license without exam.

An applicant must meet one of the following requirements:
1. Graduation from a college or university offering an accredited minimum four-year curriculum in landscape architecture and a minimum of three years of practical experience; one year under the supervision of a professional landscape architect.
2. Graduation from a college or university offering a non-accredited four-year course in landscape architecture, and a minimum of four years of practical experience. One year of experience must be under the supervision of a professional landscape architect.
3. A minimum of ten years of practical experience in landscape architectural work.

Thirty-six hours of continuing education are required biennially for license renewal.

Other: $15 - Initial monthly registration fee until the immediate next June 30 (i.e.,
prorated)
