License Title: Asbestos Abatement Contractor/Supervisor
License Description: An asbestos abatement contractor/supervisor must have complete knowledge of the job duties performed by the abatement worker; be able to function as a working supervisor on the job site; read blueprints; keep job site records; ensure compliance with regulations (i.e., air-monitoring and air-sampling, abatement encapsulation techniques, and proper disposal of materials); and, complete necessary paperwork required by the Iowa Division of Labor Services, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). He or she must ensure that only state-of-the-art work practices are used in the construction and maintenance of barriers and decontamination enclosure systems, positioning of warning signs, minimizing fiber release (i.e., use of wet methods, negative pressure ventilation equipment, and high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) vacuums).

Requirements for License:An applicant must have successfully completed the proper training and exam from an Environmental Protection Agency-approved trainer. Persons seeking this license must complete an initial five-day training course and an annual refresher course thereafter. The initial Contractor/Supervisor training course includes lectures, demonstrations, at least six hours of hands-on-training, respirator fit test, training on supervisory skills, course review, and a written examination.
A completed application form from the Division of Labor Services must be submitted containing a physician's certification and a respirator fit test. Applicants must submit with the form the non-refundable fee and a copy of their training certificate and two 1"x1" photographs. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
An eight-hour refresher course is required annually for license renewal.
