Write a Cover Letter for Your Resume

Although there are several different types of Resumes, you should make sure that the following types of information are documented in your resume.

NAME, ADDRESS, TELEPHONE NUMBER

Place this information at the top of the page. Avoid abbreviations and nicknames. Use the same name used on your employment application.

EMPLOYMENT GOAL

This is a brief statement about the type of work or specific job you want. This statement should include one immediate and one long-term objective or goal.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

List the schools you have attended. Begin with your present or most recent school. List diplomas you have earned at each school. If you did not graduate, you should state how many years you attended the school. If you are a recent graduate, briefly describe activities, accomplishments, awards, and honors. These should relate to your employment goal.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Include the names and addresses of employers, beginning with your present or most recent work. If you list dates, use only the beginning and ending month and year. Provide your job title and a brief description of your duties and accomplishments.

VOLUNTEER WORK

List volunteer work related to the job you are seeking. List it the same way you did for your work experience. You may choose to list volunteer work under the work experience section.

MILITARY SERVICE

Include recent or extensive military service experience. You may want to include this information under work experience.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

In this section you might list awards, honors scholarships or civic activities. You might include languages you speak or write, computer skills, and equipment you can operate. You should list your licenses or certificates that relate to the job.

REFERENCES

You can include a sentence such as "References provided on request" rather than include them on your resume. List your references on a separate piece of paper. Offer this list during your interview. Limit your reference list to three people you have known or who have observed your work skills for at least one year. Do not list relatives.
